
Prof. Dr. AKIN AKAKIN, M.D. Phd std.
Prof. Dr. Akın AKAKIN, a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery at Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine, specializes in brain tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, and movement disorders surgery.
He was born on January 1, 1978, in Lüleburgaz. After attending İzmir Atatürk Science High School, he enrolled in Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. He began his Neurosurgery residency at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2002 and graduated in 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, he worked as a research scientist at the University of Florida in the United States, where he began his neuroanatomy studies alongside Prof. Albert Rhoton, one of the most respected scientists in neuroanatomy, and published numerous articles in this field. He started his compulsory service at İstanbul Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital in 2010 and worked there until 2012, when he was appointed acting chief of the clinic.
In 2011, he was awarded the Scientist of the Year by Euroasia Neurochirurgica, receiving his award in Mumbai, India, and bringing it to our country. He became the first Turkish scientist to receive this award. He has been involved in award-winning studies within the framework of TND, Tubitak, and BAD.
He served as the Head of the Neuroanatomy Group until 2021. In September 2012, he began working as an Assistant Professor in the Brain and Spinal Surgery department at the newly established Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine Private Göztepe Medical Park Hospital, where he currently continues his duties as a Professor. He spearheaded the establishment of the university’s basic medical sciences neuroanatomy laboratory and the organization of national and international meetings and courses. He has nearly 80 articles in internationally indexed journals, has authored more than 15 book chapters, and published over 60 presentations at national and international conferences. His H-index, indicating academic impact, is 20. He actively initiated Movement Disorders Surgery and Deep Brain Stimulation treatment in functional brain surgery within BAU TIP and has published numerous articles in national and international journals. In 2014, he organized the first deep brain stimulation cadaver course in our country at Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine. He is one of the founding members of the Neuromodulation Society and has also played an active role in the routine organization of neuroanatomy courses at this university. He received his associate professorship in 2017 and his professorship in 2022. He has performed nearly 1500 DBS surgeries. He has utilized his training in the service of science as an educator in many centers in Turkey. He ensured that BAUTIP Neurosurgery was recognized as a Center of Excellence for functional surgery and MER technique by institutions supporting education.
He has served in prestigious associations such as the International Neuromodulation Society (membership and founding of the Turkey Chapter) and the Turkish Neurosurgical Society (membership and Head of the Neuroanatomy Group). He is married with three children.
